Sweden Credit Ban
Published: 1 October 2025

The Swedish Government has introduced a new bill that would extend the existing ban on gambling with credit, with the changes scheduled to take effect from 1 April 2026 if approved.
The proposal amends Sweden’s Gambling Act, requiring licensed operators to implement measures preventing players from using credit to fund gambling activities. This includes a prohibition on both allowing credit-financed play and offering credit directly to customers.
According to the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, the purpose of the bill is to address growing concerns around gambling-related debt in the country. While exemptions may be granted in cases deemed to serve the public interest, the regulation would generally apply to all license holders across Sweden’s gambling market.
This measure builds on the current ban already in place and signals a stronger stance from Swedish authorities in limiting financial risks tied to gambling.
