UKGC Issues £2.87M Fine

The UK Gambling Commission has fined Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, which operates the Betfred and OddsKing brands, a total of £2.87 million for failures in both social responsibility and anti-money laundering procedures.

Investigators found that the company allowed significant gambling activity without carrying out proper checks. In one case, a customer lost £70,000 within just ten hours of opening an account. Another customer deposited more than £20,000 and lost over £10,000 before any contact was made, and no further action was taken for four months, during which losses grew even higher.

The Commission highlighted that the operator’s safeguards for responsible gambling were set at levels that were too high and were not applied consistently. As a result, customers showing signs of potential harm were not identified or supported in time.

Serious weaknesses were also found in the company’s anti-money laundering systems. Risk assessments were incomplete, monitoring thresholds were ineffective, and staff training was insufficient. Customer due diligence and source-of-funds checks were often inadequate, leaving gaps in oversight.

According to the regulator, this case demonstrates a continued focus on holding operators accountable. Companies are expected to strengthen their policies and ensure compliance, or face strict financial penalties.
